Field Crops

Our Broad Beans and Peas are also growing strongly, both plants are now full of flowers which means that before very long pods will start to appear and then we hope to have a bumper crop. Steve has drilled thousands of Carrot, Parsley and Beetroot seeds and now they are beginning to show as long rows of green in our fields. It all seems such a long time ago that we were busy in the fields preparing the land and planting thousands of Potatoes, Broad beans, Peas, Carrots and Beetroot as well as Parsley. Now it is very satisfying to see that all of our hard work really was worth it and that these crops are now growing well.

Another very important crop for us each year on our Farm is Grass. Obviously this is not grown for you, our customers but rather for our herd of Pedigree Hereford Cattle. The grass will be cut and then stored in large bales which weigh about a ton each. These will then be kept to use as a feed for our Cows during the long winter months when the natural grass is in short supply. There are many more new photographs of our developing crops on our Gallery Page, why not take a look and see how things are developing. Although things this year are still roughly a month behind due to the extended cold weather earlier in the year we do feel that we are starting to catch up slowly and are now starting to see the prospect of a good harvest. This will obviously be good for us as a business but we are always happy to have plenty of crops for our many customers at our Stall in Llanelli Indoor Market. Many of our customers have been supporting us for many years and they eagerly await our new crops as the season progresses so it is always a very satisfying feeling for us to be able to satisfy that demand. We hope to welcome many new customers to our Stall and help them to enjoy the fruits of our labours, namely super fresh vegetables, picked each day and available to purchase within an hour or so…..unless you grow it yourself you will not find fresher than that! We look forward to welcoming you to our Stall in Llanelli Indoor Market.

Many of you reading this page will have planted your own vegetables in your garden. The only difference really between your garden and our farm is the scale of produce that we plant and produce. So for example this year so far we have planted 3 tons of Seed Potatoes, 2500 Cabbages as well as a few thousand Carrots and Beetroot seeds. There is an enormous amount of work that has to go into preparing the land before crops can be planted. This work is all done by tractor but can still take many days, ploughing to break up the ground then rotivating the ground. We then use a machine to create the ridges which are then rolled and then seed can be drilled. We plant Potatoes using the Ridger, two people sit on the Ridger which is pulled by the tractor and Seed Potatoes are dropped down a chute by hand. The Ridger digs a channel in the earth in which the Seed Potatoes are dropped and then the Ridger will close the earth over the Seed Potatoes creating what you can see in this page background.

Many of our customers on our stall are particularly fond of our own grown Peas and Broad Beans. We are pleased to inform you that although we had to delay planting this year for almost a month due to the cold weather we have planted many thousands of both Peas and Broad Beans seeds. These seeds have now germinated and the plants are now growing well. We will supply regular updates in our gallery of how they are developing, so you can see the produce that you purchase growing on our Farm and know exactly where and how it was produced.

We always find this time of year both highly enjoyable but also quite stressful. Last year was quite simply a disastrous year across the whole of the UK for crops due to the constant rain which destroyed a huge percentage of farmers crops. The inevitable result was that the price of vegetables shot up due to the shortage of vegetables available. We put in the same amount of work each year to prepare the land for planting, we spend ever increasing amounts of money on seed each year and yet we are totally in the hands of Mother Nature as to how our crops will develop. It can be heart breaking to know just how much time, effort and money goes into planting our crops only to see them fail due to bad weather. We are hoping for a much better year this year with an abundance of growth in our fields, only time will tell.

As the year progresses our workload will increase as we will be planting more crops whilst harvesting others. Then there is the constant task of weeding where needed, the harvested crop needs to be washed before taking it down to our stall in Llanelli Indoor Market for sale. We hope that this very brief explanation of what we need to do each year to grow our crops will help you to understand just what goes into providing our customers with our own grown vegetables. So many of our customers love the fact that they can purchase vegetables from us that were only picked a couple of hours ago and they can really taste that freshness. So why not try some of our produce….go on, treat yourself !!
